MAYFIELD - Bed & Breakfast in a rural setting :

Over 1 1/4 acres of  landscaped garden with water features and  small orchard area.  Guests are invited to enjoy the garden and its facilities'

Situated in  the small village of Kirk Hammerton, with its ancient church (built in 950AD) visitors will find an undisturbed way of life that has remained unspoilt for over a thousand years.

With easy access from the A1 or by train, having the village station just 3 minutes walk from the house. It is ideally situated for exploring the cities of York, Harrogate, Ripon and the Yorkshire Dales and Moors.

KIRK HAMMERTON  is derived from ‘tun’ and ‘hamor’, meaning ‘the homestead by a hill’. Kirk Hammerton therefore is “Hammerton with a church”. The Roman road from York to Boroughbridge ran just north of the village.

The village was included in the Domesday survey as ‘Hanbretone’or ‘Ambretone’ under the lands of Osbernde Arches. His land included the mill and fishery and was considered to have a high value.

The Church is of Saxon origin. The exact date of its construction is uncertain but was probably around AD 950. The Saxons did not normally build in stone but some of the enormous stones at the base of the tower show signs of Roman tooling. The church was greatly extended on its north side in the nineteenth century. Its situation on a high knoll is evidence of an early settlement. The register dates from 1714.

THE CIVIL WAR  - The village must have been involved in the Battle of Marston Moor (1644), which took place only a few miles away. Tradition has it that many of those slain were interred in pits in the churchyard and many skeletons, which were unearthed in 1926 are believed to be contemporary with the Battle.
